*** NOTICE ***

The ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technology
web site is no longer in operation.

The United States Department of Education continues to offer the

ERIC Database

at

https://www.eric.ed.gov

All ERIC Clearinghouses plus AskERIC will be closed permanently as of December 31, 2003.

In January 2004, the Department of Education will implement a reengineering plan for ERIC. The new ERIC mission continues the core function of providing a centralized bibliographic database of journal articles and other published and unpublished education materials. It enhances the database by adding free full text and electronic links to commercial sources and by making it easy to use and up to date.

From January 2004 until the new ERIC model for acquiring education literature is developed later in 2004, no new materials will be received and accepted for the database. However, the ERIC database will continue to grow, as thousands of documents selected by the ERIC clearinghouses throughout 2003 will be added. When the new model is ready later in 2004, the new ERIC contractor will communicate with publishers, education organizations, and other database contributors to add publications and materials released from January 2004 forward.

LM_NET: A Worldwide Discussion Group for School Library Media

For all school library media people--a listserv called LM_NET (library media network) has been set up to serve the school library media community, world-wide. This list is operated by Mike Eisenberg, Syracuse University, AASL, and Peter Milbury, library media specialist, Chico, California, CMLEA.

The LM_NET discussion group on school library media topics started in June 1992, at the end of the K-12 school year. It has grown to over 4,000 members since then. Members come from most of the U.S., Canada, and several other countries in The Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Approximately 75-100 messages are posted per day on a variety of topics related to school librarianship. We are hoping that many new school library media people will continue to join this exciting, endless discussion, bringing our community together on a daily basis.

Conversation on this list will focus on the topics of interest to the school library media community, including the latest on school library media services, operations, and activities. It is a list for practitioners, sharing ideas, solving problems, telling each other about new publications and up-coming conferences, asking for assistance or information, and linking schools through their library media centers.

This discussion is open to ALL school library media specialists - worldwide- and people involved with the school library media field. It is not for general librarians or educators. We want to keep the activity and discussion focused on school library media. But, the listserv can be used by library media people for many different things-to ask for input, share ideas and information, link programs that are geographically remote, make contacts, etc.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO LM_NET

LM_NET has automated its handling of requests for membership. Requests are now being handled automatically by the Syracuse University listserv computer and software.

Send the following command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

In the BODY of e-mail type:
SUBSCRIBE LM_NET yourfirstname yourlastname

(substituting your real name for Melvilla Dewey)

The LM_NET listserv computer will respond with an informative message, which will ask you for a confirmation. You will then be added if you properly follow the simple directions.

Note: The _ in LM_NET is an underscore and NOT a hyphen!

LM_NET ARCHIVES AVAILABLE TO NON-MEMBERS AT ASKERIC

LM_NET Archives and information are kept in monthly files. You may read/obtain these files in the archives at the AskERIC Gopher server.
